Water is the most common material on the earth. Well, what is heavy water and what are the differences between heavy water and ordinary water? You might hear of heavy water before. Now, let’s talk about it.
We know that water consists of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom and ordinary water doesn’t contain heavy hydrogen or deuterium. This means 2 hydrogen atoms in heavy water may be heavy hydrogen or deuterium. This is the main difference between ordinary water and heavy water.
Deuterium is different from the hydrogen atom in ordinary water. Each deuterium or protium contains a neutron and a proton. Therefore, there are 2 kinds of heavy water: deuterium protium oxide (DHO) and deuterium oxide (D2O).
Generally, heavy water exists naturally but it is far less seldom than regular water. It is estimated that twenty million water molecules may contain 1 water molecule heavy water.
